EPA 608 Type I · Section 608 Regulations · Hard
Why isn't a ductless mini-split that holds only 3 lbs of refrigerant a small appliance?
Answer: A. Its refrigerant circuit is completed in the field.
- AIts refrigerant circuit is completed in the field.✓ Correct
- BIts charge is over the small appliance limit.
- CMini-splits use refrigerants exempt from Section 608.
- DIt has a variable-speed compressor.
Why A is right
The small appliance definition requires the unit to be fully manufactured, charged and hermetically sealed in a factory. A mini-split's line set is connected on site, so it is not a small appliance however small its charge. Servicing it calls for Type II or Universal.
